THE STORY

Behind the name

Established in the mid-1980s, the Yates vineyard is situated in the ‘mid-west’ of the Coonawarra strip part way between the Coonawarra and Penola townships. It is named after the previous owners of the land.

Planted to both Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, it produces fruit with great varietal definition and in years like 2023, an extra surge of concentration and flavour.  Surrounded by a number of large gum tree’s, there is always a hint of mint and eucalypt which helps define the regionality and style, hallmarks of wine from this vineyard consistent over the last 40 years.

THE STORY

Winemaking

The Yates vineyard was picked in mid-April 2023, at the end of a cooler vintage butt showing great flavour and intensity at the optimal Baume. The parcel was fermented in 10T stainless steel tanks, with pump-overs daily to assist the extraction and flavour development. Ferment took 7-days before being pressed to barrel at around 2 baume. Following completion of primary ferment, the wine was underwent a secondary malolactic ferment in barrel further developing flavour and integrating with the oak and tannins. Time in oak was approximately 20 months, with a selection of French oak with 30% new.
